BEFORE & AFTER

All people blush, either with embarrassment or after spicy food and alcohol. But for some people such facial flushing has turned into a life-long nuisance and suffering. Rosacea is chronic condition which is more common in fair-skinned people and runs in families.

Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment has proven highly successful in the treatment of vascular lesions presenting on the face, neck and décolletté. IPL systems operate on the principle of selective photo-thermolysis in which target vessels are selectively damaged with minimal risk of injury to the surrounding healthy tissue.

How does it work?
The IPL (intense pulsed light) consists of intense light that is emitted in a series of short pulses. The wavelength of the light is specially selected so that when it is directed into the skin, it is predominately absorbed by blood vessels within the epidermis and dermis. In area of vascular lesion (Rosacea), the blood vessels are overgrown or in high concentration. These blood vessels will absorb the light, which causes them to heat up and undergo a process called thermocoagulation. This destroys the entire vessel while causing minimal damage to the surrounding skin.

How is treatment carried out?
It is necessary to apply a thin layer of gel to the skin prior to treatment. This helps to cool the skin, as well as ensuring maximum transmission of light from the applicator to the skin. The light is pulsed through the quartz and onto the skin. If the results are satisfactory, the applicator is then moved to the neighbouring area and the process is repeated. During treatment you must wear protective eye goggles.

Am i suitable for the treatment ?
Almost everyone can have this treatment. The upper skin layer contains melanin, a very good absorber of light, which is why it is the skin’s natural defense against harmful sunrays. The concentration of the melanin in the skin is greater in darker skinned people and increases when the skin is exposed to UV light. The light emitted by the system will be absorbed to a certain extent by the melanin as well as vascular regions and will heat the skin. The more melanin in the skin, the more heat will be produced so it is therefore not possible to treat dark-skinned and tanned individuals. The lesions that will respond best are thought to be those consisting of blood vessels of a small diameter that lie close to the surface of the skin, such as those seen in Rosacea or thread veins.

How does the treatment feel?
As the light energy is absorbed by the skin, it heats it up, and creates a sharp pinprick burning sensation. Most patients describe the discomfort as moderate and acceptable. No anesthetic is required, other than cooling the skin.

What will I see after the treatment?
Following treatment, the damaged vessels are absorbed by the body and little or no trace of the initial lesion remains. Treatment is mildly uncomfortable and redness and a slight burning sensation are normally experienced straight after the treatment but typically persists for only short period of time post treatment. A cooling pack will be applied to the skin to ease these symptoms. You may see a temporary “grayness” in the vessels, which will pass, and you might notice that some vessels have disappeared immediately.

Are there any side effects ?
The visible light is completely safe so no special precautions are needed apart from glasses for the brightness. The skins of some patients become quite red immediately after treatment. There might be some “tight” sensation and moderate swelling. In rare cases some blistering may occur. However, most patients experience no side effects and the redness usually disappears within hours to a few days. Very rarely, if skin exposed to sun, hyper/hypopigmentation may occur.

How many treatments are necessary?
The length and number of treatments will depend on the type and size of lesion present, but typically 3-5 treatments are usually enough to leave you with a smooth, clear bright complexion. Treatments should take place every 6 weeks.

How do I prepare for treatment?
Patients should avoid tanning or sun-bathing/bedding for at least 6 weeks and must not use any fake tan for 1 week ahead of and during the entire treatment period to avoid excessive discomfort from light absorption in the epidermis. Immediately after the treatment, the skin is particularly sensitive to UV light, and strong sunlight should be avoided for 1-2 weeks. We strongly advise using +50 SPF protection.

How long does each treatment take?
The length of each treatment will depend on the type and size of the treated area, but a typical treatment session for Rosacea will take in the region of 30-45 minutes. Consultation Procedure Prior to treatment, a consultation is conducted in which a medical history is taken to confirm suitability for treatment, there is also an opportunity for any questions a you may have to be answered. Before treatment commences you must provide a written consent and a small patch test will be carried out.

You will not be hustled or pushed into buying anything at your first consultation.
